OSX Install experience by Jim: Thomas, First off, thanks for your very informative site. I've owned a 6500/250 for some time now. It had always been a reliable work horse until the advent of OSX. But today, I get to bring her out of moth balls, all thanks to you. Using XPostFacto 2.2, I was able to successfully install OSX 10.1 without much trouble. First I installed a 2 partition 13 gig drive. Installed OS 9.1 on the second partition w/ XPF and installed 10.1 on the first (due to the 8 gb limit, naturally...). Once I figured out NOT to use the Security Update that was offered by Software Update, rather download the 10.1 only version from Apple, I was able to update to 10.1.5 and beyond. I will outline all of my processes to success and share them with you once I've got them sorted out. As far as performance, I'm rather impressed for a 250 mhz 603. I had no SCSI troubles at all, able to install directly from the CD. I also have an extra internal SCSI drive and an external zip, both seen & used with no issues. The only drawback is no sound, but, I think I can live without that. Thanks again for all the work you've put into your site. Each of the pages on my site will have a link back to you as an homage. You've finally given me the Apache server I always wanted. Until later, Jim ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom, As you requested, my OSX on a 6500 steps... Installed OS 9 on 2nd partition. Tried to run XPostFacto, but got an AppleGuide or CarbonLib (forget which) error. Updated to OS 9.1 & tried again. Worked fine. Inserted OS X 10.1 Install CD into internal SCSI CD drive, launched XPostFacto. Set autoboot off, input - keyboard, output - built in video. Set Install source as CD drive, destination first partition. Clicked install. XPF copied over necessary items from the CD & machine rebooted. Got the open firmware prompt & entered "boot" to begin the process. Got the OSX rom start up screen (the "apple") for a few seconds, then the system went into verbose mode. Got several errors about the patched files not loading & being compatible. Then several source files were copied from the CD. Once finished the installer launched. I chose to do a custom install, keeping out the extra language resources (since I don't speak any of them), and continued the install. After about 20 minutes (yes, really, only 20 minutes...), all files were installed & the machine auto rebooted. Once the initial account setup & config was done, I installed the Asante ethernet driver (I was pleasantly surprised that it worked). Rebooted & set up the new network connection. Updated with the initial security file that I'd downloaded from Apple (Apple Security Update 07-18-02 for v10.1 - very important!), rebooted, then ran the 10.1.5 Combo Update. All went smoothly. Once running again, rebooted into OS 9, launched XPF & turned autoboot back on. Rebooted and the machine went into OS X on it's own without a hitch. Ran software update & got all the latest goodies from Apple. Of course, the above is all after I had installed and wiped the OS X partition 3 times from previous tries. It took a little to get the process down, but once I did, it was pretty straight forward & easy. It's going to make a decent web server. Already have PHP/MySQL operational. Let me know if you have any further questions. You can use any part of this message if you like. Regards, Jim
