Response from Apples Performa discussion forum Subject: Re: Optimizing Productivity on a 6400 ((PART 2)) ((NOT!)) Monday, 6/16/97 5:16 CDT Author: Jim Myers Email:jmyers@blacktype.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Response: I have a similar setup, Performa 6400/180/48Mb RAM/512K cache/etc. I cannot use MacOS 7.6 or 7.6.1. I also use Open Transport, and the same issue applied to me.I switched back to MacOS 7.5.5, and Open Transport flawlessly. For that matter, I've been running my Mac without major crashes for three weeks so far. My Apple Dealer recommends, especially for the 6400, to stay away from 7.6. They say that *some* 6400 users will encounter stability problems, even more likely under 7.6.1. According to my dealer, about 90% of stability issues go away under 7.5.5. Of those, the remaining 10% become issues of using 3rd Party harddrives on the internal IDE drive. My recommended steps. 1) Backup your data. 2) Reformat your IDE drive with Drive Setup 1.2 or later. Should be available at most Apple Dealers. 3) Restore your MacOS 7.5.3 Performa software. 4) Apply the "PowerPC Interrupt Extension" if it is not already in your Extensions folder. 5) Upgrade to 7.5.5 through the net version of the updater. 6) Apply the "6360/54xx/64xx Updater". After installation, and reboot, make sure that the "54xx/64xx Update" (note the difference in names) does *not* exist in your Extensions folder. If it does exist, then the update did *not* work. 7) Install Open Transport 1.1.2, and OT/PPP 1.0. Do not use the version from the Performa CD, that version doesn't work. 8) Restore your data and applications. I did these steps, and my computer straightened right out. Hope this helps, email me, or reply here to let us know your progress.
