System background: 6400/180 with Sonnet 300/512k G3 upgrade 56M ram stock motherboard video stock Apple 8x CD-Rom stock 2.3G IDE HD with MAC OS 8.6 Micropolis 2.1G SCSI HD on stock motherboard SCSI bus=0 (1 HFS+ partition for installing OS X server on) Well so far its looks like it won't work :( I get up to the part where the installer says it is configuring my system to boot to the Server partition on the install CD and then reboots to OpenFirmware saying "bootr, unknown word" So I tried a few tricks I read and none of them worked either. Here is what I tried: first off when it tries to configure my system to boot from the server partition on the CD I get an error message that reads "System Disk is not supported on this system and any changes will not take affect" and it only has a button for OK and after pressing that I get another message stating it will now restart to continue the install. When I hit restart is when it boots to OF and has the bootr unknown word error. I tried hitting the little power button in ht eback once the click here to restart is displayed so it does a full shutdown as some have mentioned works. On reboot I get the same bootr unknown word. OK I also read that if you do a shutdown and hold the C key to reboot to the CD again and launch the System Disk app that you can manually configure it to work. Well the C key did not work and it went to the bootr thing again. I zapped the PRAM and can now get back to OS 8.6 from HD or CD so I'm back to normal but not finished yet. I tried running the System Disk app now and it gives me the same error saying it won't be effective on this system but it now displays a window where I can make selections of which drive to boot to. I selected the Mac OS server (server) partition on the CD and then clicked on the custom or configure button to get more options. at the bottom is a button that reads "stop at open firmware" I selected this as others have said this might work as it won't try the bootr command and lockup. I hit save but it didn't seem like it did anything at all. It may be that my OpenFirmware is not supported by this app? lets see what happens. OK I rebooted and it did not go into OF and just reboot OS 8.6. I also read I could hit the CMND-OPTN-O-F keys at boot to get into OF. I tried this and I'm now in OF. It says its OpenFirmware 2.0 and says type "bye" to conitinue booting the Mac OS or type "boot" to boot to the default: There is no name after the word default and this may be the problem. I type boot and it says "can't open: " with no name after that. I wonder if there is some code I can type in to get it to work from this point? I type bye and I'm back in OS 8.6. Bye the way once the installer has tried to configure OF you will always get the bootr unknown word at every boot unless you hold the CMND-OPTN-O-F keys to keep it from trying or zap the PRAM to get it back to normal Mac use. One last note. I don't know what the installer is doing to the HD I select but every time I ran the installer the HD was unable to be mounted and had to be initialized again before it would mount. Even rebooting would not mount it until it was initialized. If someone can give me a code to try entering from OpenFirmware maybe the installation might work? I'll keep trying. if this helps in writting a code the Mac server partition is SCSI bus=0 id=3 partition=11 I don't think its the G3 upgrade at this point as I cannot even get OpenFirmware to boot to anything other then the Mac OS. After I get past this point then I think the G3 might come into play. I could be wrong? Tom
